Abstract
Based on the theory of similarity the characteristics of liquid steel flow characteristics in the tundish are studied by using water to simulate the liquid steel flow and at the same time the average residence time of the liquid steel and the volume of the dead zone, pug-like zone and mixture zone are calculated by measuring the residence time distribution(RTD) curve of the liquid in the tundish. Experiments show that by modifying the tundish the minimum residence time of the liquid steel in the tundish increases from 17 s to 33 s and the volumetric ratio of the dead zone reduced from original 12.68 % to 7.64 % and hence the flow field in the tundish is optimized.
