To interpret the works of Thomas Hardy through archetypal criticism theory is a brand new angle, seldom employed by traditional research. One of the reasons why Tess is considered Hardys greatest, most richly connotated and most artistically charming novel, lies in its use of Biblical archetypes,Which can be generally classified into three kinds, namely, archetypal characters, archetypal situations, archetypal symbols and associations. The employment of these Biblical archetypes,on the whloe strengthened the tragic sense of the novel.
