Cao Yu's Characterization and Shakespeare

Abstract

Cao Yu is an outstanding dramatist in the modern times. The publication of his representative works,Thunderstorm, Sunrise, Wilderness, and Peking Man and so on, marked the maturity of modern drama, prompting the development of modern drama to a peak. Scholars tend to compare Cao Yu, praised as Chinese with Shakespeare, the great dramatist in the English Renaissance. This essay will discuss the complex relationship of influence and the acceptation between Shakespeare and Cao Yu from characterization for a better understanding and evaluation of artistic values in Cao Yu's play scripts more accurately.
