The Expression of PCNA Protein and its Relationship with Recurrence of Bladder Cancer

[Purpose] To investigate the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in bladder cancer,and its relationship with clinicopathologic factors and recurrence of bladder cancer. [Methods] Tissue samples from 148 cases with bladder transitional cell carcinoma and from 25 cases with normal bladder as control group were studied. The expression of PCNA protein was detected by SP immunohistochemistry. [Results] The positive rate of PCNA protein in bladder cancer was significantly higher than that in normal bladder tissue(16.0% vs 50.7%,P0.001). The positive rate of PCNA protein in bladder cancer was related to grade,clinical stage and recurrence,not related to age,sex ,tumor number and size(P0.05).One hundred and four patients with superficial bladder cancer (Ta～T1) was followed up for 2～95 months,and 64 cases was recurrence.The positive rate of PCNA protein in recurrence patients and non-recurrence patients was 56.3% and 15.0% respectively (P=0.001). [Conclusion] PCNA protein was over expression in bladder cancer,it may relate to poor prognosis.
