Abstract
From a study of the marine fishes, collected from the Yellow Sea near Lienyunchiang (连云港) in the last two years by the Biological Department of Nanking Normal College, the author found 2 species of fish new to China, of which Coelorhynchus multispinulosus Katayama constitutes the first known representive of Order Macruriformes to Chinese ichthyofauna. The description of the two fishes is as follows.Ophichthyidae Mystriophis porpkyreus (Temm. et Schl.)Body length 1252 mm. Elongate, mostly cylindrical. Depth 25.55 in body length; head 9.21. Snout 9.71 in head; eye 22.67. Snout short, broad, flattened, slightly contracted behind its tip, like the snout of crocodile. Eye small, wider than high, abouf two times the height, measuring 2.33 in snout. Interorbital slightly longer than eye. Anterior nostrils in a short tube; posterior nostrils in the upper lip, looking downward, before vertical through front border of eye. Mouth large, lower jaw slightly projecting, cleft 2.31 in head, extending far behind the posterior border of eye. Teeth of unequal size. Vomerine teeth very large, in one row, 4 in number; teeth in upper jaw in two very distinct rows, those of the outer row far apart and larger; lower with a single row of large canines. Gill openings wide. Body scalekss.Dorsal beginning far behind pectoral, the distance behind gill opening twothirds of length of head. Anal origin just behind anus, its base 1/2 the length of body. Dorsal and anal ending about 1/3 length of cleft of mouth before pint of tail. Pectoral small, 8 in head. One specimen collected from Lienyunchiang. Macruridae Coelorhynchus multispinulosus KatayamaFirst dorsal Ⅱ, 9; pectoral 15; ventral 7; scales in series between lateral line and origin of second dorsal 5 (excluding those in the lateral line).Body kngth to caudal base 211 mm. Body elongate, tapering posteriorly. Depth 8.12 in body length; head 4.49; width of body over pectoral base 137 in depth. Head large. compress:d, width somewhat less than its greatest depth. Head with longitudinal ridges. Suborbita! ridge rather strong, continued to preopercular angle. Occipital ridges almost parallel, but diverging rather widely posteriorly. Ridge above nasal fossa and orbit continuous with postorbital ridge. Snout 2.14 in head; eye 4.27; maxillary 3.62; depth of body 1.81. Snout pointed, projecting anteriorly, like the snout of sturgeon. Eye oblong, wider than high, measuring 1.91 in snout; 1.09 in interorbital, its height 1.38 in width. Nostrils large. Mouth ventral, cleft extending to below middle of eye; teeth in villiform band. Barbel below the middle of mandibular symphysis, about 1/2 the width of eye. Branchiostegals 6; gill-membranes attached to isthmus. Anus located just before anal fin; distance from insertion of ventral to center of anus 2.14 m bead; distance from tip of lower jaw to ventral 1.42.Body covered with ctenoid scales, which are armed with numerous small pmules arranged in quincunx order. First dorsal spine stout and very short; second dorsal spine long, 2.24 in head, first dorsal fin reaching base of third ray of second dorsal when fin is depressed, tnterdorsal space sightly shorter than base of first dorsal. Second dorsal very long, its posterior end conflunted with caudal. Anal similar to second dorsal, its origin slightly behind the vertical from origin of second dorsal. Pectorals 2.61 in head. Ventrals thoracic, posterior margin not reaching to anal. One specimen collected from Lienyunchiang.
