Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of levamlodipine and nifedipine for patients with mild and moderate essential hypertension. Methods Sixty eight cases with essential hypertension were divided randomly into two groups:Levamlodipine and nifedipine. Treatment lasted for one year. Parameters of blood pressure was measured before and after treatment. Results Blood pressure were significantly reduced in both groups (P0.05). There was no significant difference in responder rates between levamlodipine treated patients (88.2 %) and patients taking nifedipine (76.5 %). The trough to peak ratios of systolic and diastolic blood pressures of levamlodipine were greater than that of nifedipine. Conclusion Levamlodipine once daily is effective, safe and well tolerated in hypertensive patients.
