Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of melatonin and serotonin on expression of nitric oxide synthase(NOS) in cerebral cortex of epileptic rats. Methods The model of epilepsy was induced by melatonin in rats and the expression of NOS in cerebral cortex was detected by western blot analysis. The level of 5-HT in hippocampus was demonstrated with immunohistochemistry. Results The expression of NOS in cerebral cortex of epileptic rats was increased in melatonin group, compared with control group, and there was significant difference(P0.05);Compared with melatonin group, glucocorticoids could significantly decrease the expression of NOS in cerebral cortex(P0.05) Conclusion Melatonin and serotonin have inhibitory effect on the expression of nitric oxide synthase in cerebral cortex of epileptic rats.
