Abstract

The original meaning of the character cheng(乘) is to ascend and to mount (a car, etc.) . From this original meaning, its derived meanings have formed a relatively complicated cluster of meanings, and the derived character sheng(乘) appeared. cheng(乘) has similar pronunciation and related meanings with the characters deng(登), zhi(陟),sheng(升), and teng(滕), they all contain the characteristic meaning of to ascend , and are characters of a same origin.
