Expression and clinical significance of cyclooxygenase-2 in human breast carcinoma

Abstract

Objective To study the clinical significance of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)expression in breast carcinoma.Methods Fifty-five cases of breast carcinomas was investigated by immunohistochemical(Elivision) assay on the expression of cox-2.Results The positive rate of COX-2 protein was 50.9%(28/55).There was no relationship beween the expression of COX-2 protein and patients' age,tumor size and histological grade,the positive expression of COX-2 protein of the patients with estrogen receptor,progesteron receptor in negative group were significantly higher than those in positive group(P0.05).The expression of COX-2 was correlated with lymph node metastasis(P0.01).Conclusion The expressions of COX-2 protein in breast cancer is upregulated.It may play an important role in the development,metastasis and prognosis of breast carcinoma and could be used as an important biologic marker for breast carcinoma.
