Abstract

The genus Velu was established by Ghauri in 1963 and its type species is Velu caricae Ghauri. Dworakowska (1980), Sohi and Mann (1986) described one species respectively thereafter. Up to now, three species are known in the world. In this paper, the genus Velu is reported for the first time from China and three species new to science are described and illustrated. A key to Chinese species is provided. The type specimens are preserved in the Entomological Museum, Northwest Sci-Tech University of Agriculture and Forestry (NWSUAF). Distribution. China (Yunnan, Henan); India.Key to Chinese species (♂) 1.Aedeagus with one basal appendage, branched or unbranched, pygofer appendage bifurcate subapically2 Aedeagus with a pair of lateral appendage, pygofer appendage not branchedV. pleuroprominens sp.nov. 2.Aedaegus with preatrium well developed, and with a bifurcate ventral appendageV. furcatum sp.nov. Aedeagus with preatrium not well developed, and with a small lateral and a very long unbranched ventral appendageV. longiprojectum sp.nov.1 Velu furcatum sp. nov. (Fig.1) Body length (incl.teg.): ♂3.7*!mm. This new species is similar to V. caricae Ghauri, but can de distinguished from the latter by: 1) basal appendage of aedeagus longer than the shaft, apex of the aedeagal shaft curved ventrad; 2) anal appendage well developped, fairly long; 3) apical branches of the prgofer appendage subparellel, not right angled. Holotype ♂, Lancang, Yunnan Province, 2 July 1999, 1*!100*!m, coll. QIN Dao-Zheng.2 Velu longiprojectum sp. nov. (Fig.2) Body length (incl. teg.): 3.9-4.1*!mm, ♀4.0*!mm. This new species is similar to V. furcatum sp.nov., but can be separated from the latter by: 1) aedeagus with a lateral and a very long unbranched ventral appendage, and the ventral one much longer than the shaft prominently; 2) pygofer appendage well developed, strongly curved dorsad; 3) anal appendage curved in lateral view; 4) abdominal appendage reaching the 6th abdominal segment. Holotype ♂, Lancang, Yunnan Province, 2 July 1999,1*!100*!m, coll. QIN Dao-Zheng. Paratypes 2♂♂,2♀♀,same data as the holotype.3 Velu pleuroprominens sp. nov. (Fig.3) Body length (incl. teg.): ♂3.9*!mm. The new species resembles V. pruthii Dworakowska,1980 and V. antelopus Sohi Mann,1986, but can be seperated from the two latters by the following characters: 1) preatrium of the aedeagus well developed, nearly as long as the shaft, aedeagal shaft with a pair of lateral appendages at base, and the appendages slightly shorter than the shaft; 2) without anal appendage in lateral view; 3) apex of the pygofer appendage unbranched. Holotype ♂, Longyu valley, Henan Province, 13 July 1996, 1*!000*!m, coll. ZHANG Wen-Zhu.
