The Clinical characteristic of essential hypertensive patients with high arterial stiffness index

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristic of essential hypertensive patients with high arterial stiffness index (ASI).Methods One hundred and fifty six essential hypertensive patients were recruited randomly in the outpatient department of high blood pressure of the General Hospital of PLA.The patients were divided into two groups according to their ASI values.They were normal ASI group(n=127) with the ASI values ranging from zero to seventy and high ASI value group (n=29) with the ASI values higher than seventy.The demographic parameters,arterial stiffness index and blood biochemical parameters were measured and compared between the two groups.Results The patients with abnormal high ASI values possessed older age,longer hypertensive history,higher systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure,but lower diastolic blood pressure (all P0.01) comparing with the patients with normal ASI values.In the high ASI value group,the levels of both blood uric acid (P0.01) and blood urea nitrogen (P0.05) were higher than the normal ASI value group.Conclusion Old age,long hypertensive history,high systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure,low diastolic blood pressure,high levels of blood uric acid and blood urea nitrogen may be associated with essential hypertensive patients with high ASI values.
