Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),as non-hematopoietic multipotent stem cells, are considered as the most promising stem cells for the treatment of a variety of diseases. But their low rate of homing to target tissues and organs limit the therapeutic efficacy when they are used in stem cell therapy. Many studies have shown that, the mechanism of MSCs homing(including the molecules involved, such as chemokines and their receptors, and adhesion molecules)is very similar with that leukocytes homing to the inflammatory region.Subsequently, according to the above mechanism, the rate of MSCs homing has increased by preconditioning before the transplantation. As a result, the efficacy of MSCs treatment has been improved to a certain extent.Further study clarifying the specific mechanism of the MSCs homing may be a breakthrough point for fundamentally improving the efficacy of MSCs therapy and expanding its treatment range.
