Abstract
As the general pandect of the whole Lao Zi, the first chapter of “Daojing” should be approached from the following three perspectives: textual study of Lao Zi, contextual consideration and overall understanding, if we want to fully understand the implications of the chapter. In this chapter, “Dao” is an indescribable and metaphysical concept; and “You” and “Wu” are respectively Lao Zi's calling of the two eras of the remote savage past and the later material age.
