Abstract

Objective:To investigate the outcomes and complications of phacoemulsification and capsular intraocular lens implantation (Phaco+IOL) in diabetic cataract patients. Methods:Phaco+IOL surgery was carried out in 61 individuals (81 eyes) with diabetic cataract.Results:85.19% had a postoperative visual acuity better than 0.5, 88.89% had better than 0.3. The most common complications reported were: posterior capsule rupture, 5 eyes (6%); corneal edema, 16 eyes (19%); significant fibrous exudation in the anterior chamber, 6 eyes (7%); posterior capsule opacity, 10 eyes (12%); and diabetic retinopathy, 13 eyes (16%).Conclusion:Phaco+IOL is an effective and safe surgery with limited complications for individuals with diabetic cataract if their blood sugar is controlled well.
