Abstract

Objective To detect the expression of cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2) in uterine fibroids and normal uterine smooth muscles thus to investigate its roles in the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids. Methods To detect the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in uterine fibroids and normal uterine smooth muscle thus to investigate its roles in the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids. Results the COX-2 positive index in smooth muscle cells(11.90) was much lower than that in uterine fibroids cells(46.50,P0.05).At protein level, the COX-2 expression in uterine fibroids was significantly higher than in smooth muscle(0.872 ± 0.035 vs 0.202 ± 0.056).Similarly,at mRNA level,COX-2 expression in uterine fibriods(0.122 ± 0.062) was higher than in normal smooth muscle tissue(0.025 ± 0.009)(P0.05).Conclusion COX-2 expression in uterine fibroids was significantly higher than uterine smooth muscles, suggesting an important role of COX-2 in the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids.
