Etiology of Short Stature in Children: An Analysis of 137 Cases

Abstract

Objective To investigate the causes of short stature in children,and to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods Clinical data of 137 children with short stature were retrospectively analyzed.Results Among the 137 children,growth hormone deficiency was found in 49(35.8%),idiopathic short stature(including familial short stature)in 27(19.7%),small for gestat-ional age in 22(16.1%),constitutional delay of growth and puberty in 18(13.1%),sexual precocity in 13(9.5%) Turner syndrome in 5(3.6%)[including 3 cases of 6XX/45,XO,1 case of 46,xi(xq),and 1 case of 46 X,del(xp)],and intracranial tumors in 3(2.2%)(including 2 cases of craniopharyngioma and 1 case of pituitary adenomas).Conclusion The causes of short stature are complicated in children.The diagnosis and treatment should be based on etiology.
