Abstract

Wang Dewei put the opinionHow there comes May 4th Movement without the late Qing Dynastyin his Repressed Modernity in the Late Qing Dynasty:New Novel Theory, which has roused hot discussions.Considering his theory on modernity,it has been found that there exists spatial and temporal context dislocation as far as the text itself is concerned;from the aspect of literary modernity development, there is double misreadingof enlightenment and aesthetics of literature. It is unreasonable to come to the conclusion that late Qing Dynasty is prior or superior to the May 4th Movement just from the single literary type of late Qing Dynasty novels. The positioning and understanding of Chinese literary modernity can not rely on a kind of impulse and new idea, but needs a rational manner to carry on the research and exploration.
