Complications and its prevention caused by intraoral sagittal split ramus osteotomy in correcting mandibular prognathism

Objective To analysis the complications caused by technique of intraoral Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy (SSRO) for correction of mandibular prognathism and how to prevent them from occurring. Methods From January 1997 to January 2005, 95 patients suffering from mandibular prognathism or accompanied by other deformities have been operated on by technique of intraoral SSRO in our hospital were studied. Results 11 cases disorder of local sensibility, 1 case of significant bleeding, 1 case mandibular fracture during the cleavage of the ascending ramus, one case postoperative infection, 4 cases postoperative relapse. Conclusion Injury of inferior alveolar nerve, hemorrhage, fracture, infection and relapse are common complications of SSRO. It not only influence the effect of operation, but also can be a threat to life. Effective preventive measures must be taken according to its cause to reduce or even prevent it from occurring.
