Abstract

Objective To summarize the experience of carotid endarterectomy(CEA) in the treatment of internal carotid artery occlusion. Methods All of 25 cases with internal carotid artery occlusion were treated with CEA.The intraoperative samples were analyzed by pathology. The patients accepted postoperative regular review and long-term follow-up.Results The primary patency rate was 88%.No deaths occurred in 30 d.Complications were observed in the 7 patients which were improved after treatment.25 patients were followed-up for a mean time of 9 months. The symptoms were improved in the 20 patients, and were not improved in the 5 patients. Conclusion CEA is a safe and effective method for the patients with internal carotid artery occlusion, and can improve the cerebral ischemia related symptoms and prevent the cerebral ischemic stroke.
