Study on Pragmatic Functions of Discourse Markers

Abstract

The discourse marker is a word or phrase that plays the introducing and restraining role in language comprehension and has significant discourse functions.This paper reviews the development of discourse markers,analyzes the related coherent theory and the relevance theory,then discusses partial functions of the discourse markers,namely,connection,interaction and modality,and finally shows the role of discourse markers in different texts,communication objects,and contexts.
