In whole cut flowers of rose ( Rosa chinensis Jacq. cv. Bellamie), 0.1 g/L Ca(NO 3) 2 treatment markedly delayed shrivel of petals and wither of flowers. The treated flowers stayed turgid and the vase-holding life was two days longer compared with untreated flowers. Further studies showed that Ca(NO 3) 2 treatment could increase the fresh weight of cut flowers. Relative permeability of petal plasma membrane, which is a reliable indicator of petal membrane senescence, was retarded in Ca(NO 3) 2 treated flowers. Ca(NO 3) 2 treatment also increased the content of soluble protein and stabilized the level of reducing sugar in petals.
