Clinical effects of leukapheresis plus chemotherapy on hyperieukocytic leukemia

Abstract

Objective To observe the clinical effects of leukapheresis plus chemotherapy on hyperleukocytic leukemia( HL) . Methods Twenty - three patients with HL in treatment group received leukapheresis by using CS -3 000 Plus blood cell separator plus chemotherapy. Fourteen HL patients in control group were chosen to receive chemotherapy alone. Results After leukapheresis, the WBC count of all patients decreased significantly ( P 0.001) . The symptoms of leukostasis were relieved in 23 cases. Complete remission( CR)rate of the treatment group (47. 8 % ) was significantly higher than that of control group (28.6%, P 0.01) . Case - fatality rate( 17.4%) in early stage was significantly lower than that of control group( P 0.01) . Conclusion Leukapheresis can reduce WBC count rapidly and improve symptoms of leukostasis in hyperleukocytic leukemia. Leukapheresis plus chemotherapy can increase the CR rate and reduce side effects of chemotherapy. It is an accessory treatment importantly.
