An Analysis on the Mentality of Literati in the Yuan Dynasty through Poetic Dramas

Abstract

The Yuan Dynasty had ceased the imperial examinations for 80 years.The literati had been excluded from their traditional way of official career.This essay introduces several figures of Confucian libertines from the poetic dramas to analyze the mentality of playwright in the Yuan Dynasty.While their attitude towards the society vacillated between amusement and engagement,their poetic dramas demonstrates a particular mentality of adherents of former dynasty,which is different from the orthodox poetic tradition started from the Book of Songs and Qu Yuan.
