Abstract
Wutai Mongolian Ying in Shangyi County is an isolated island of Mongolian language and culture in Hebei province. The local language is Mongolian, and 95.1% of the local people speak both Mongolian and Chinese;22.8% of the Mongolians speak Mongolian, among whom 75% are women who were married there from Inner Mongolia;27.3% pupils receive education in Mongolian language schools in Inner Mongolia.Villagers value Putonghua the highest although they think Mongolian the most practical. The Mongolian language is preserved mainly because of the compact inhabitation of different ethnic groups, intermarriage with Mongolians in Inner Mongolia, education of the Mongolia language to students as well as the villagers' positive attitude towards Mongolian language and culture inheritance. As the main communicative language,Mongolian will play an important role in the inheritance of Mongolian culture. However, with the number of migrant workers increasing, there will be generation gaps between adolescents and the middle/aged though adolescents can communicate in Mongolian.
