Abstract

Colour reaction between cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTMAB) and titan yellow was studied by spectrophotometry. Results showed that CTMAB reacted with titan yellow to form a 1∶2 complex of ion association in the medium of 0.1 mol·L-1 NaOH solution. The absorption maximum of the complex was located at 500 nm with the apparent molar absorptivity of 4.0×104 L·mol-1·cm-1.Beer's law was followed in the CTMAB concentration range of 0~12 mg·L-1.Based on the test results,a spectrophotometric method for the determination of CTMAB was developed. The method is to be used for the determination of CTMAB in the water samples with satisfactory results.
