The Comparison of Topiramate and Tiapride in Treating the Children of Tourette Syndrome

Objective To assess and compare the effectiveness and safety of topiramate and tiapride for Tourette's syndrome(TS) in children. Methods 70 cases with tourette syndrome consistented with DSM-Ⅳ-TRTS diagnostic criteria were divided at random into topiramate and tiapride group. Cases in topiramate group treated with the dose of topiramate were 2-3mg/(kg d). Cases in the control group were treated with tiapride, 50-150 mg, twice a day, and maintenance dose 50-150 mg/d. The reduction in the number of attachment was recorded to measure curative effect,the adverse reaction was evaluated. Results There was no difference in curative effect between topiramate group(85.7%,36/42) and tiapride group(82.1%,23/28). But there were some significant differences between two groups on adverse reactions(χ2=4.2311,P=0.0397). The adverse reaction in topiramate group was 35.7%, which iinclude mild 33.3% and moderately severe 2.4%. The adverse reaction in tiapride group was 60.7%, which iinclude mild 35.7% and moderately severe 25%. Conclusion Topiramate and tiapride show significant effects, but topiramate to treat tourette syndrome was mild adverse reactions.
