Abstract

Hemingway is a contemporary, outstanding novelist of America, and a stylistic great master that has a good command of contemporary narrative art. The old man and the sea is Hemingway's novel. He skillfully employs the free direct speech, and makes use of the common vocabulary and a good number of simple declarative sentences and compound sentence withandconnected in depicting the character, and revealing his indomitable tough-guy image. And the use of symbolism deepens the theme of the novel, and produces the special stylistic effect and artic appeal.
