Effect of curcumin on the growth of gastric cancer cell BGC-823 in vitro

Abstract

Objective:To observe the effect of curcumin(CCM) on the growth of gastric cancer cell BGC-823. Methods:Human gastric cancer cell BGC-823 was cultured with various concentrations of CCM(0,30,60,90 and 120 μmol/L) for 24 hours and 48 hours.The proliferation of BGC-823 cell was measured by MTT colorimetric assay;and the cell cycle distribution was examined by flowcytometry.Cell apoptosis was determined by TUNEL. Results:The cell′s pseudopodia was retracted after CCM treatment,the cells became small and round,tumor giant cells were reduced or no tumor giant cells.MTT assay showed that CCM was significantly inhibited the growth of gastric cancer cells.FCM results suggested CCM affected gastric cancer cell cycle,the cells were arrested in G2/M phase.TUNEL results showed that CCM induced gastric cancer cell apoptosis(P0.05-P0.01). Conclusions:Curcumin inhibits the proliferation of gastric cancer BGC-823 cells,changes the cell cycle distribution and induces cell apoptosis.
