Causes of the end stage renal disease patients transfering from peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis

Objective To analyze the causes of patients treated with peritoneal dialysis(PD) transfer-ring to hemodialysis(HD) and compare it to the reports of other countries. Methods 266 patients recaved peritoneal dialysis between 1993 and 2000 in Shanghai first hospital were retrospectively analyzed according to different causes including peritonitis, failure in ultra- filtration, inadequate dialysis, peritoneal tube problem, severe hydrothorax and other causes. Results Altogether 66 patients were transferred from PD to HD, in which 55 patients transferred in our hospital were in this analysis. The average peritoneal dialysis time is (18.1 ± 17.9) months. In the first 6 months from initial PD, the rate of causes for dropout from peritoneal dialysisis 15.8%, 5.2%,21%,26.4%, 10.5% and 21%. For patients whose peritoneal dialyais times longer than 12 months, the rates are 46.7%, 23.3% ,10%,0%,6.7% and 13.3% respectively. Conchl-sions In the first 6 months peritoneal dialysis tube problem peritonitis later and failure in ultra - filtration are the main causes for patients to transfer from peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis. Failure in ultra - filtration usually occurs after peritonitis.
