A Survey on Causes for Withdrawal of Peritoneal Dialysis

Objective:To analyze the cause of dropout and correlative factors in peritoneal dialysis(PD)patients.Methods:We collected clinical data of 167 patients from Jan 2009 to Jun 2012 in the center of peritoneal dialysis in our hospital,and found forty-three patients(25.7%)quit peritoneal dialysis.In the forty-three patients,20 cases were dead(46.5%),21 cases convert to hemodialysis(HD)therapy(48.8%),1 patient had renal transplantation(2.3%),and 1 patient lost follow-up(2.3%).Then we investigated the causes of death and conversion HD therapy in peritoneal dialysis patients.Results:The major cause of death in the 20 peritoneal dialysis patients was infection(35%),and the second cause was cardiac diseases(30%).Economic condition was also a major cause of death.The first cause of conversion HD therapy was PD related peritonitis in 21PD patients(47.8%).Health insurance policy was also an important cause of conversion HD therapy(17.4%).Conclusion:Infection and cardiac-cerebral vascular diseases were the main reasons of death in peritoneal dialysis patients,partly because of poor nutritional status,calcium and phosphorus disorders.Peritoneal dialysis related peritonitis was still the main cause of conversion HD therapy in PD patients.Economic condition and health insurance policy were important reason for withdrawal of peritoneal dialysis patients.
