ON LIU XIE'S VIEW OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE IDEAL PERSONALITY

In his well-known work The Construction of a Person of Ability of Literary Review, Liu Xie puts forward his view of the construction of the ideal personality, that is, a person of the ideal personality must be someone who bears the quality of keeping himself trained both physically and intellectually for the summon of his time in time of need, and he should also be of a perfect ethic devotion, of an unconventional attitude towards life, of the intellectual ability of administrating a country, which, to a great extent, embodies the most ideal mode of the traditional Chinese personality and at the same time reveals its historical limits of putting too much attention to morality instead of intellectuality, of focusing on senses instead of sensibilities, of laying too much attention to groups rather than to individuals. The construction of the modern personality is not only a question of transition but a re-construction on the basis of inheriting the excellent parts of the traditional Chinese personality and of learning the scientific elements of the western theories on construction of personality so that an ideal personality, with the combination of both sensibilities and senses, the unity of moral personality and scientific spirits, the harmonious integration of individual values and social values, can be formed.
