Abstract
In order to solve the serious issue of taste and odor in the B tributary of Taihu Lake as the drinking water source, the removal efficiencies with three methods, such as dosing potassium permanganate solely, dosing powdered activated carbon solely and potassium permanganate combined with powdered activated carbon were investigated. The jar test and full scale test results show that the treatment process of potassium permanganate combined with powdered activated carbon is the best one in removing taste and odor. The threshold odor number of the sedimentation effluent is only 5 with the removal rate of taste and odor of 98.8% when the potassium permanganate and powdered activated carbon dosages are 0.5 mg/L and 40 mg/L,respectively.And the consumption of powdered activated carbon can be saved by 20%.In addition, the algae can be removed effectively by this combined method.
