Narrowing the gap and resolving the conflicts between urban and rural areas have become astrategic task of China's urban transformation.It is an urgent need for urban planning discipline to expand its research field to rural development and planning.From the perspective of rural development,this paper analyses the role of rural areas in the process of urbanization and stresses the keeping of rural vitality as an important strategic and policy orientation for China's healthy urbanization.Based on a discussion about current planning system transformation and the status of rural planning,the paper proposes a shift from the sole focus on urban planning to a system that includes and coordinates regional,urban,and rural planning.Furthermore,the paper also includes dicussions on the particularity of rural planning,the prospect of future planning research,practice, education as well as other relevant issues.
