Abstract

From the angle of the cognitive linguistics,this paper discussed metonymy and the relevant contents,including definition,cognitive explanation,the difference between metonymy and metaphor,its classification and etc.Metonymy is not only a linguistic phenomenon but also a conceptual phenomenon.It is not only a rhetorical figure but also a cognitive process.Metonymy follows the principles of proximity and prominence,while metaphor operates according to the similarity of things.
