Reflection on the Arbitrariness of Linguistic Signs

The arbitrariness of linguistic signs is foremost and exists in all languages.It is the theoretic backbone and nuclear content that Saussure used to establish his structuralistic linguistics.Summing up the oppugning、negative and affirmative viewpoints about Saussure's theory on arbitrariness of linguistic signs,the paper demonstrated two points.The first is that the two elements of linguistic signs is the sound and notion and both the signifier and signified is arbitrary.The second is that the arbitrariness of linguistic signs is existing first midst and last.It is impossible to be forfeited with its established by usage and its demonstrability.
