Abstract

Alice Hoffman's novel Here on Earth has received some negative reviews since its first publication in 1997,mainly because it's considered as an imitation of Emily Brontё's masterpiece Wuthering Heights.The examinations on realism and modernism in Here on Earth are among the discussions.This paper is concerned with the realistic means through the studies on similarities and differences between Wuthering Heights and Here on Earth with emphasis on the comparison between characters,themes and writing techniques.Based on this,there comes the conclusion that Here on Earth presents the real life in the present society and the problems that we may encounter in our own life,so that Here on Earth contains more realistic meanings than Wuthering Heights.
