Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between HMGB1 and oxidative stress in patients with atrial fibrillation( AF). Methods 53 patients with paroxysmal AF and 33 patients with persistent AF were enrolled in this study. 30 age- and sex-matched healthy subject were considered as control group. Serum contents of HMGB1 and malondialdehyde( MDA) as well as superoxide dismutase( SOD) activity were measured. Results HMGB1 and MDA levels in persistent AF group was higher than those in control group and paroxysmal AF group( P 0. 05). HMGB1 and MDA levels in paroxysmal AF group was higher than those in control group( P 0.05). In addition,SOD activity in paroxysmal AF group was lower than that in control group( P 0.05). The serum MDA level was positively correlated with the serum HMGB1 level( n = 86,r = 0. 524,P 0.05),while the SOD level was negatively correlated with the HMGB1 level( n = 86,r =- 0. 481,P 0. 05).MDA,SOD,hs-CRP and HMGB1 levels were independent predictors for AF. Conclusion Increased oxidative stress level may contribute to the elevated HMGB1 level in AF patients.
