Abstract

By studying the criticism of Du Fu's poems in the Tang Dynasty, this paper tries to sort out how the criticism of Du's poems developed. The poet lived in a period of the dynasty when romanticism was strong and poem writing was most prosperous. During his life time, Du's poems were almost unknown. In the middle of the dynasty, however, they were highly praised by such famous poets as Yuan Zhen, Bai Juyi, Han Yu and Meng Jiao, and Du became one of the most accomplished poets in Chinese literature. In the late Tang Dynasty more poets began to study Du's poetry creation, criticize his poems, commemorate and even deify him from different perspectives, pushing him to a new height.
