Abstract
Liang Qi-chao was closely related with the New Culture Movement of the May 4th Period and made special contributions to its development. First, out of his patriotism, he proposed a conception of both Chinese and Western culture, which proved of great scholastic value in the debate on controversial eastern and western cultural problems; Second, he was a man who enlightened such advanced intellectuals as Chen Duxiu, Hushi, Lu Xun, Mao Zedong and so on. His political ideas had become a spiritual catalyst that stimulated the New Culture Movement to surge forward; Third, he proposed Poetry Revolution, Fiction Revolution and Literature Revolution, organized Learning Together Association, edited and translated new books, invited foreign celebrities to China to make academic speech and meanwhile, he made a comparatively full research on Chinese academic field. From many aspects, he advanced the New Culture Movement, and laid foundations for the development of academia in modern China.
