Abstract

Lactic acid is recovered from sodium lactate solutions using bipolar membrane electrodialysis(BMED) with two compartments.Conversion factor of sodium lactate, current efficiency, energy consumption and yield of lactic acid are studied. The results show that the performance of cation exchange membrane JCM-I is better than that of DF120.The yield of lactic acid could exceed 90%,the current efficiency is about 60% and the electric energy consumption is between 2.5~3.5 kW·h/kg at 95% conversion factor of sodium lactate. The membranes need to be improved for long-term use.
