Abstract

Objective To evaluate the interaction of terbinafine with either itraconazole and fluconazole against 28 clinical isolates of Candida albicans from onychomycosis patients in vitro. Methods A checkerboard microdilution method that adhered to the recommendations of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards(NCCLS-M27)was applied to study the vitro sensitivity of 28 clinical isolates of Candida albicans to the combination therapy of terbinafine with either Itraconazole and Fluconazole and their interactions in vitro. Results When terbinafine and itraconazol were given in combination, synergy was observed in 17.9%(5/28)of the isolates and 71.4%(20/28)of the isolates were additive, and 10.7%(3/28) were indifferent, while antagonism was not observed. When terbinafine and fluconazole were given in combination, synergy was observed in 17.9%(5/28)of the isolates and 71.4%(20/28)of the isolates were additive, and 10.7%(3/28) were indifferent, while antagonism was not observed. Conclusion An effective interaction between terbinafine and triazoles against isolates of Candida albicans from onychomycosis patients.
