Abstract

Objective To study the expressions of matrix metalloproteinases-2(MMP-2) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator(uPA) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and their relationship with the tumor invasion and lymph node metastasis. Methods Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the expressions of MMP-2 and uPA in cancer tissuse of 50 cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and normal paraneoplastic tissue. Results The expressions of MMP-2 and uPA in the carcinoma were significantly higher than those of the normal paraneoplastic tissue(u=4.478,5.856;P0.01).Expressions of MMP-2 and uPA in the carcinoma were not correlated with the tumor size and histological grade(P0.05),but related with regional lymph node metastasis(χ2 =4.381,5.452;P0.05).A positive correlation between the expression of MMP-2 and uPA in terms of regional lymph node metastasis was noted(χ2 =8.186,P0.01). Conclusion The expression of MMP-2 and uPA is closely related to the regional lymph node metastasis in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.A detection of MMP-2 and uPA is of definite significance on an understanding of the possibility of metastasis and choice of surgery.
