Abstract
Objective To analyze radiographic characteristics of pneumothorax in neonates, and to improve its diagnostic quality.Materials and Methods Supine anteroposterior chest film was taken in 39 neonates with pneumothorax, of which additional supine lateral chest film with horizontal projection was simultaneously carried out in 30. One or more radiographic follow-ups were made in 19 cases. Spiral CT scanning was done in 3 cases. The imaging findings were retrospectively analyzed. Results Of the total 39 cases, medial pneumothorax was seen in 16, anterior pneumothorax in 22 and lateral pneumothorax in one. Pneumomediastinum was accompanied in 9 cases. Conclusion For neonates, chest film is usually taken in supine position. Therefor, pneumothorax in neonates makes its appearance different from those seen in adults. In neonates, the pneumothorax is mainly located in the anterior or medial area of the thorax, and pneumomediastinum is commonly accompanied. CT scanning can provide more valuable information.
