Abstract
During an investigation on the freshwater fish-fauna of Shiwandashan, Guangxi, China, 3 Apr. 1999, specimens of cyprinid fish belonging to the genus Microphysogobio were collected in the Fangcheng River basin which is a small river entering directly to the China South Sea. The authors considered them to be new species and propose to name them as: Microphysogobio pseudoelongatus.Microphysogobio pseudoelongatus sp. nov. (Fig.1) Holotype No. 70974, 101.3*!mm TL, 81.5*!mm SL, collected from Dalu Twon, Fangcheng County, Guangxi, China (21°52′N,108°7′E), April 1999. The locality belongs to Fangcheng River basin. Paratypes 2 specimens: No.70975 and No.70976, 86.5*!mm and 71.0*!mm TL, 70.0*!mm and 56.5*!mm SL, the locality and time of collection are same as the holotype. The types are deposited in Fish Museum of Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. D. iii-7; A. iii-6; P. i-11; V. i-7-8. L. S. 3742_v38; circumpeduncular scales 10;gill rakers on outer of the first ache 6-7; Pharyngeal teeth 5-5; vertebrae counts 4+32. Depth of body in standard body length 6.35-6.80 (6.57) Unit:mm, length of head 4.91-5.40 (5.17), distance from front origin of pectoral fin to snout 2.46-2.58 (2.51), length of caudal peduncle 4.45-5.40 (4.92), depth of caudal peduncle 13.14-14.00 (13.43). Length of snout in length of head 2.52-2.81 (2.69), diameter of eye 3.60-3.97 (3.74),width of interorbital space 4.72-5.23 (4.98), length of caudal peduncle 0.91-1.00 (0.95), depth of caudal peduncle 2.44-2.70 (2.60). Width of interorbital space in diameter of eye 1.31-1.37 (1.33). Depth of caudal peduncle in length of caudal peduncle 2.44-2.95(2.60). This new species differs from all other known species of genus Microphysogobio Mori thought it is similar to M. kachekensis and M. elongatus in having long body and front position of dorsal fin. But in comparison with the latter two species: 1) new species is more leptosomatic; 2) distance from front origin of dorsal fin to snout is much shorter than distance from back origin of dorsal fin to base of caudal fin; 3) new species has a continually black stripe alongside body but no black patch and also not any black horseshoe-shaped patch on dorsal side of body. Besides, a pair of special papillae which like fore-tooth in the middle of upper lip are about two times as big as neighboring papillae and the head length of the new species is not more longer than length of caudal peduncle, which are unique in the genus.
