A comparative study of risperidone and chlorpromazine in the treatment of schizophrenia

Abstract

Objective: To probe into the efficacy and side effects of risperidone in the treatment of schizophrenia. Methods: 78 schizophrenic patients were randomly assigned into risperidone group (n = 39) and control group (chlorpromazine group, n = 39). They were tested with Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Treatment Emergent Symptoms Scale (TESS) after treatment 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks. Results: After treatment the scores of BPRS of two groups were significantly different than before treatment (P 0.01). The side effects of risperidone group were significantly lower than that of Chlorpromazine group. Conclusions: The efficacy of risperidone in the treatment of schizophrenia is similar than Chlorpromazine, but it has better safety.
