AIM: To compare the effects of risperidone and chlorpromazine in treating schizophrenia. METHODS: Sixty six schizophrenia patients were randomly assigned to two groups, risperidone group [M 23, F 10; age (38± s 10) a] and chlorpromazine grorp [M 22, F 11; age (38±12) a]. They were given orally risperidone (4.4±1.1) mg·d -1 or chlorpromazine (456±98) mg·d -1 respectively for 12 wk. Symptom improvement and adverse reactions were rated with PANSS and TESS. RESULTS: The total effective rate of risperidone or chlorpromazine was 82% and 76%. The scores of negative syndrome scale of risperidone group were decreased more significantly than chlorpromazine group ( P 0.01 ). The adverse reactions were mild. CONCLUSION: The improvement of positive syndrome are similar within both groups, but for negative syndrome, risperidone is superior to chlorpromazine.
