Abstract
Objective: To investigate the prophylactic effect of Phellinus igniarius on hepatic fibrosis. Methods: Experimental model of hepatic fibrosis was induced by carbon tetrachloride and supplementary high-lipid and low-protein diet and alcohol-containing beverage. Serum biochemical markers and collagen content were tested to evaluate the prophylactic effect of Phellinus igniarius on hepatic fibrosis. Results: Synthesis of protein was improved and the serum levels of aminotransferases and collagen were significantly decreased in prophylactic group. Histomorphological studies showed that the degeneration of hepatocytes and the proliferation of collagen in liver were decreased in prophylactic group. Conclusion: Phellinus igniarius could relieve hepatocyte injury and prevent the genesis and development of hepatic fibrosis indued by carbon tetrachloride in rats.
