Abstract
Objective To study the prophylactic effect of traditional Chinese medicine bupleurum polyclonum(BP) on hepatic fibrosis in rats. Methods Experimental model of hepatic fibrosis was induced by carbon tetrachloride(CCL_4) and supplementary high-lipid and low-protein diet and alcohol-containing beverage.Serum and liver biochemical markers and collagen content were tested to evaluate the prophylactic effect of bupleurum polyclonum on hepatic fibrosis. Results Pretreatment with BP could decrease the activities of ALT and AST in serum, reduce the MDA content, increase the SOD activity, prevente the increase of HyP in liver tissue in CCL_4-induced chronic liver injury model rats.Histomorphological studies showed that the degeneration and necrosis were decreased in prophylactic group. Conclusion BP could prevent the genesis and development of hepatic fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats.
