On TAO Yuan-ming's Life Consciousness

Abstract

This paper has demonstrated TAO Yuan-ming's thought of life philosophy starting from his consciousness of life. The author holds that TAO's rational understanding of life and death explains his calmness before death. As an ambitious poet and unable to realize his ideal, he was also filled with anxiety and bitterness when death befell him. Unlike some of the current comments on TAO Yuan-ming and his works, this paper shows that he is an outstanding poet full of contradictions and bitterness in his heart.
