Abstract

In terms of the learning modes, the mode in the eremite way by some scholars in Tang Dynasty has the self-learning feature and is actually an adult-style learning mode, forming an important part of the old-style private learning. The prevalence of this kind of learning mode in Tang Dynasty is mainly because of the declination of official education and the prosperity of the imperial examination system. Most scholars, when learning in the eremite way, always selected famous mountains or convenient transportation areas as their reading places. In their studies, they would choose Confucian masterpieces and poetry as their learning mate-rials,and sometimes in the temples, they would compose poems by chance. In addition, this mode of learning would be likely to form a mass teaching mode when scholars learned together, which exerted a great influence on the production of academies in the Song Dynasty.
